  • Veterinary specialists examine and treat animals. They diagnose illness and disease, perform surgical interventions or prescribe medicines. Veterinary specialists monitor and document the healing process. They advise owners of animals on aspects such as species-appropriate keeping or breeding.
  • Veterinary specialists specialise in animal species and/or in medical areas of expertise. There are specialisations which cover individual species, such as horses or pigs. Some also specialise in groups of animals encompassing several species, such as small animals or fish. Various areas exist in the case of specialisation in medical areas of expertise. Examples include microbiology, surgery or hygiene.
  • Veterinary specialists complete advanced professional training. In Germany, this training is governed by the federal state chambers of veterinary surgeons on the basis of recommendations made by the Federal Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons. Upon successful completion of this examination, veterinary surgeons are entitled to use the designations applicable to the respective specialist area.
