Professional activities
Geologists investigate the structure, formation and development of the Earth. In so doing, they seek to understand the chemical and physical processes which have changed the composition and appearance of the surface of the Earth over the course of the Earth’s history. They can work in the areas of science and teaching, in raw material extraction, in environmental protection, or in providing expert opinions.

Geologists are employed for example
- at universities and research institutes
- in public administration, e.g. regional geological offices, town planning departments and water management authorities
- at companies involved in raw material extraction and civil engineering
- at engineering offices, e.g. for ground investigations
