22.11.2013 - New White List to accompany the Employment Ordinance

The Federal Employment Agency issued a new White List of the occupations in which employment is possible pursuant to § 6 of the Employment Ordinance. The previous ban on the licensing of nursing staff from the 57 countries which themselves have shortages in skilled health workers was lifted.

07.10.2013 - New regulations for recognition procedures in healthcare occupations in 2014

From 2014, there will be specific provisions on how adaptation measures in the health occupations should be designed and implemented. The Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) has published a relevant Legal Ordinance in the Federal Law Gazette.

01.08.2013 - Positive conclusions drawn on the first anniversary of the “EU Blue Card”

The available figures enable positive conclusions to be drawn on the first anniversary of the “EU Blue Card”. As of 30 June 2013, a total of 8,879 Blue Cards had been issued since the introduction of the system.

01.07.2013 - Immigration also possible for skilled workers with a VET qualification

The new Employment Ordinance entered into force on 1 July 2013. It provides skilled workers who have completed their vocational education and training in states outside the EU with the chance to work in Germany. Following the Blue Card for highly skilled workers and easier recognition of foreign professional and vocational qualifications via the Recognition Act, this represents a further bridge for qualified skilled workers to enter Germany.

18.06.2013 - Modernisation of the EU Directive on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications agreed

Negotiations on the updating of the EU Directive on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications, which has applied since 2005, have now been concluded. Alongside the introduction of a “European professional card”, an electronic profile in which a person‘s skills are stored, numerous other improvements are being planned.

14.06.2013 - North-Rhine Westphalia passes Recognition Act

The North-Rhine Westphalia Federal State Recognition Act was passed on 15 May 2013. It regulates the procedures for assessing the equivalence of vocational qualifications acquired abroad for occupations which are governed by North-Rhine Westphalian federal state law.

11.06.2013 - “Recognition in Germany“ information portal

To mark its first anniversary, the website received a new design optimised for mobile devices and new contents in April. A new “Advanced Filter” was , for example, added to the “Recognition Finder”. This enables the Recognition Finder database to be filtered according to federal state, occupational groups or type of occupation such as regulated occupation.

03.04.2013 - Recognition Act Proves Effective

One year after the entry into force of the Recognition Act, Federal Education Minister Johanna Wanka has been reviewing progress: "The law has proved effective. It is estimated that roughly 30,000 applications were filed. In most cases, equivalence of foreign professional qualifications was established and recognition granted. This contributes considerably to securing an adequate supply of skilled labour."

28.03.2013 - “Making a welcoming culture of recognition a reality”

One year after the Law for the Recognition of Foreign Professional and Vocational Qualifications entered into force, the accompanying hotline operated by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) also celebrates its first anniversary on 1 April 2013. The hotline provides callers from Germany and abroad within initial guidance on how to pursue the recognition procedure.

The new national hotline for the recognition of foreign professioanl and vocational qualifications in Germany has proved hugely popular. Since April last year, more than 7,000 people from 140 countries have used the advisory service provided by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).

15.01.2013 - Craft trades sector benefits from the Recognition Act

The German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) evaluates the Recognition Act positively. It reports that 56 percent of assessment notices certify full equivalency of the professional qualification acquired abroad and that a further 35 percent award partial equivalency.
